Black Fashion History with KW – THE ZOOT SUIT, 1940s

THE ZOOT SUIT

One of my favorite looks is the Zoot Suit from the 1940s. They were fun, festive and full of character. I’m sure everyone remembers seeing the signature yellow suit making an appearance in The Mask with Jim Carrey in 1994. This mens style was originally associated with African-American musicians and their sub-culture. It also became popular among Chicanos and Italian Americans communities particularly in LA when the Zoot Suit Riots surfaced.

You can identify this menswear suit by its high-waisted, wide-legged, tight-cuffed, pegged trousers, and a long coat with wide lapels and wide padded shoulders. The Zoot Suit was often accompanied by linked chains on the trouser  – which is an absolute favorite accessory of mine. Even though the suits are much more slender in fashion now, the lovely colors and patterns of a 1940s Zoot Suit can still be rocked in 2015. #fashionneverfades
